“If We Don’t Discipline Ourselves, the World Will Do It For Us.” ~ William Feather

Take a look at the following picture and you will see what indiscipline has done to Nigeria.

In this picture, a Lagos commercial bus driver (popularly called Dando driver) stops at the middle of the road in broad day light to urinate.  And one can almost read his mind: “Nothing dey happen”, a popular slag meaning “Nothing will happen”. For how long my people shall  such attitude continue to be tolerated?  The words of William Feather comes in handy here and he says “If we don’t discipline ourselves, the world will do it for us.”  This perhaps partially explain why the world gets tougher on us who carry the green passport; think about it.

No doubt, some of these offenders grew up to see attitudes like this as normal. But of course, this is worrisome; we cannot build a good and decent society if we continue like this.

To tackle problems like this, we need calculated and sustained campaigns aimed at re-orientation of the mind of the people. The National Orientation Agency needs to rise to this responsibility.  Every state of the federation will also need to consciously put in place systems and processes to tackle this problem seriously. And while the orientation, or if you like, re-orientation campaigns run, there should be firm laws that punish deviant offenders to serve as deterrents. It’s either we kill indiscipline or indiscipline kills us.

In conclusion, I will re-echo the words of William Feather  and he says “If we don’t discipline ourselves, the world will do it for us.”
